and then there were two.....

Its a miserable Monday morning after a very long, quiet weekend, we are eight days into a period of separation and I have realised just how much I rely on the charity for support when my soldier is away, the Facebook page is a lovely community of people who are all going through the same thing which is so comforting to me right now.

It has been four years since my husband and I have experienced a separation of longer than a couple of weeks so it has been a real adjustment, I am SO bad at goodbyes even after all the practise I have had! I feel sick and become very quiet the day before knowing what is coming and then saying goodbye it doesn't matter where he is going I feel like my heart breaks a bit every time.

Luckily it was very late at night so our Little Trooper was tucked up and woke the next day really positive, I got up the next day feeling strong and determined to not have a black cloud over my week.

Separation is hard, it doesn't matter where your partner going (war or otherwise), how many months your partner is away for...its difficult, emotional and a real test of your resolve.
So many service personnel are away right now for a long time away from their families, its not in the news and you don't always hear about it but its happening and I want to highlight that.
To all those who tell me not so...The charity is NEEDED all the time because separation of British Armed Forces families is ALWAYS happening.

I posted an image on Facebook the day my soldier went away which many liked and shared and commented on because we all know the feeling...

One comment made me cry, lots of very real tears;

"I said goodbye a month ago yesterday and have to wait until 5th Dec to see him again, so far he has missed our sons first word, standing up, clapping his hands, my 21st birthday and our first wedding anniversary today"

I cried because I got it, I've been there. So many things people take for granted and military families have big gaps in their lives where things have been missed, memories are missing, occasions aren't what they should be and bonds with Little Troopers are affected.

If nothing else take away from this blogpost that so many families are separated right now, so many strong women are surviving and so many Little Troopers continue to need the resources the charity provides.

The reason....

It has been a while since a blogpost, I always think they should come from the heart and my heart has been touched recently; over the months I meet so many families, wonderful people and adorable Little Troopers.....ALL special but sometimes a situation touches me and makes me even more determined to reach as many British Army families as possible.

Increasingly we get turned down for funding, people saying that our cause isn't t worthy or  'sensational' enough but I know that everyone who has leaned on the charity would disagree, its a needed charity, it's one of a kind and it is supporting thousands on very little income. The emails and comments we receive on a daily basis show Little Troopers DO face unique challenges due to their parents serving and they DO require support, resources and recognition especially when a soldier parent is away.

The world is changing, people live differently and everyones situation is individual yet support never seemed adaptable...people divorce, people choose not to marry, people choose to buy their own house, people choose to be unaccompanied, but one thing remains the common thread children have soldiers who serve in the British Army and they are sent away for varying times due to their job.

In the summer we ran an event in Colchester, a lovely lady attended with her two little boys and her story really struck a cord and I tell many people their story because it proves the point I am always trying to make;

They were mid twenties, had a house and two children....one day her partner decided he wanted to join the Army, a decision which she supported, 7 months later he had done training and was in Afghanistan, her life had been turned upside down in a matter of months, it was an alien environment to her, they hadn't managed to move into Army housing and lived miles away from her partners base, she felt isolated and her children needed slowly integrating into their new life. She sought out My Daddy is a Soldier Adventures and here she was at an event miles from home wanting to get support and be part of the My Daddy is a Soldier Adventures Community. I think that day she showed real bravery.

I have followed their journey and received a lovely email this week from the family thanking us for the support, the events, the separation packs they bought, the panto tickets they won....we have helped and eased the pain of the separation for those children and their mummy and given the soldier the knowledge his family was supported. We have achieved our main objective as a charity.

I know that this charity matters and families who make an impression make it worthwhile, all the people we connect with make it worthwhile. Everyone has their own story, their own situation but one thing is certain the community that is growing is supporting everyone with a soldier parent............regardless.

Snowdon Trek 2013

Rewind 2 years....I personally have such fond memories of the trek we completed in 2011 (See previous Post HERE) I learnt so much, was on an emotional roller coaster and the trek gave me a focus and fundamentally having it to focus on got me through the tour we were in the middle of. I am so thankful for that, that tour was a dark place for me and my Little Trooper and the trek got us through.

It seemed only right we did it again and brought lots of you on the journey with us, I feel so emotional about it, so many people have registered and to think we will be sharing the path with friends old and new is so heartwarming.

Yes we are doing it to raise awareness of the charity and yes we hope to raise some pennies to enable us to run events throughout 2013 for Little Troopers but its more than that...its creating a community of people who all have something fundamental in common, people who without explanation understand, people who can relate. That's special.

The weekend in April is about achievement, community and cake!!! We have arranged drinks the night before the trek, cake at the bottom and a group meal after the trek, an opportunity to chat, share experiences but also celebrate what we are part of.

The journey since the first trek is mind blowing, My Daddy is a Soldier Adventures has been founded and registered as a charity, lots of Little Troopers have come to events and many emails have been cried at...there's so many of you out there pleased there is now something we can all dip into wherever we are based.

So 2013 is quite a milestone....6th April we visit the point where it all started and I REALLY can't wait!

Sometimes you need to look back, not just forward

We have been riding the My Daddy is a Soldier Adventures wave for over a year now......and what a wave it has been!

So often when creating something you constantly look to the future, the next thing, the goal you are striving towards for that week/month but sometimes you need to stop. and remember, look back and absorb your achievements to date.

On Friday we had My Daddy is a Soldier Adventures first Gala Dinner, it was a night of new faces and sharing our visions and dreams and the support was amazing. So heartfelt.

We put together a presentation for the evening and we realised we have achieved SO much and we have achieved it together and because we truly believe in British Army children being strong and special.

Seeing our achievements on a big screen was an emotional moment for us, our events have made a difference even if its to just one child and a community is being born which is what we wanted.

One British Army...we want One Community.

Achievements

- Events run in 2011 (Christmas Party & LapLand UK)

- Reaching £5,000 of donations

- Getting to the required level to register with The Charity Commission

- Launch of website http://www.mydaddyisasoldieradventures.org/

- Launch of Online Shop

- Partnering with many external shop suppliers (all army wives/partners)

- Developing the Little Troopers Treasure communications package

- Having an event booked in the diary every month right up until August 2012!

- MEETING SO MANY OF YOU!

The above are just a few there's so many others that are so important to us and I won't lie it has been stressful and tears have been shed but its so worth it. We have witnessed so many smiles from Little Troopers and received so many emails from you and we are on this journey all together.

So lets keep achieving and keep growing this community...For the Little Troopers at Home xxx

We really wanted to share this with you...I cry every time I watch it, this brings into a few minutes the last year for My Daddy is a Soldier Adventures and it has been such a journey!

Christmas Party for 288 - MISSION COMPLETE

As you have read we formed in the summer of 2011 after our Snowdon trek in February 2011 the first event Linda and I really wanted to have was a huge Christmas Party, a special day where we as British Army families could get together, be a community, have some fun and celebrate what we belonged to...never did we dream it would be as amazing as it was!

Lots of hard work, late nights, emails and phone calls asking for help...and not a penny of funding and the results were fantastic!

The donations from companies and organisations blew us away and it would not have been possible with out them

288 people came together on 21st December 2011 at The Victory Services Club, all something to do with the British Army with 179 of those being children of soldiers' some had dads or mums away this Christmas some were lucky enough to have them at home this year but everyone was was wearing a smile.

Carol singers greeted everyone, Santa awaited, Major General Norton got the party started, dancing happened, crafts were completed, a tombola was sold out and faces were painted there was a buzz in the room like no other.

I remember taking 2 minutes and looking down at all the children having the best time all smiling and giggling and thinking this makes it all worth it, this is what we wanted to achieve!

The day drew to a close Linda and I shed a fair few tears...of joy, happiness and tiredness I think! We had to pinch ourselves a little...WE DID IT! On our own and with no money, so many people though we were taking on too much, it wasn't possible...we proved them wrong!

The comments we have received since the event have been heartwarming and so appreciated so thank you all for those and thank you for coming and being a part of the day.

We have so many plans for 2012 and we welcome you on the ride into next year and more events with My Daddy is a Soldier Adventures for The Little Troopers at Home... xx

Makes it worthwhile....

The last couple of months have been overwhelming, tough, a huge learning curve and to be honest a little stressful.

This week we have received emails for the Christmas Party, requesting your children be added to the list, so many people are in situations where My Daddy is a Soldier Adventures will help and so many of the emails bring a tear to my eye. Why?
Emotionally I may bury the scars of deployment but; I know that feeling of being on your own, partner on tour and the desperation of 'I need to get out this house', do something with my child(ren) that's fun and uplifting, wear a smile and be with others that understand and where I don't have to explain my situation or why it might be hard right now. Be in a comfort zone.

Something huge that has come to our notice recently is that many of you, myself soon to be included, are married unaccompanied and that has its unique challenges too along with deployment and I want to support you guys.

So what makes it worthwhile?! YOU DO, knowing that we can all get together with our children this Christmas and celebrate our soldiers, this odd life we call 'Army Life' and be proud of our Little Troopers at home...
